Event Description

24-Hour Instructor Development Program

The IALEFI Low Power Variable Optic (LPVO) Instructor Course is designed for certified firearms instructors who want to expand their knowledge and instructional capabilities in the use of LPVO-equipped patrol rifles.

This comprehensive three-day instructor development program focuses on both operational proficiency and instructional methodology. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of LPVO optics while developing the skills necessary to effectively teach their officers how to utilize this increasingly common patrol rifle platform.

Using proven adult learning methodologies, this course enhances the teaching capabilities of public safety firearms instructors through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on drills, and instructor-level performance exercises.

Participants will progress from foundational LPVO concepts to advanced operational drills designed to build efficiency, confidence, and instructor-level competency.

Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on improving instructional techniques that translate directly to better training outcomes for officers in the field, ultimately contributing to greater operational effectiveness and officer safety.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the operational advantages and limitations of Low Power Variable Optics
  • Properly explain LPVO design, features, and functions to students
  • Develop effective training programs for LPVO-equipped patrol rifles
  • Demonstrate instructor-level operational proficiency with LPVO systems
  • Implement coaching strategies that improve officer performance on the rifle platform
  • Design safe and effective LPVO training drills for patrol rifle programs

The course will cover a wide range of instructor-level concepts including:

  • Desirable and less desirable features of LPVO optics
  • LPVO nomenclature and optic function
  • Differences between 1st focal plane and 2nd focal plane optics
  • Understanding combat effective zones in relation to rifle zero
  • Differences between MOA, MRAD, and BDC reticles
  • Using reticles for range estimation
  • Understanding field of view and its operational importance
  • Parallax and how to properly correct it
  • Range management and safety considerations for instructor-led training
  • Rifle handling techniques and shooting positions when using LPVO optics
  • Developing operational efficiency through drill management
  • Building a gunfighter mindset in students
  • Coaching strategies to improve student performance
  • Lesson planning for LPVO training programs

Course Completion Requirements

To successfully complete the course, participants must:

  • Pass a written examination with a minimum score of 80%
  • Successfully complete a performance-based shooting course of fire

Student Equipment Requirements

Participants should arrive prepared with the following equipment:

Patrol Rifle Equipment

  • Patrol rifle (rifle or pistol caliber acceptable)
  • Sling
  • Minimum 3 rifle magazines capable of holding at least 20 rounds
  • 600 rounds of duty or training rifle ammunition
  • Shooting mat or ground cover for zeroing exercises

Handgun Equipment

  • Duty pistol and holster
  • Minimum 3 pistol magazines with magazine holders
  • 200 rounds of duty or training handgun ammunition

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Wraparound eye protection
  • Hearing protection
  • Brimmed hat
  • Range appropriate training clothing
  • Inclement weather gear

  • Hydration fluids and snacks
